Buttermilk Road Mudhole Repair – Part II

Valley Outdoors

On Wednesday May 17th a group of 14 volunteers worked on the mudhole on Buttermilk Road near the climbing boulders for a second time. The goal was to build upon the previous work and stabilize the road to allow vehicles to pass to support the Bishop Ultras race on May 20. After many hours and approximately another 4 tons of rock placed, the mudhole on the road was successfully traveled through in a vehicle in only 2wd.

While working on the road, the volunteers were joined by some back country skiers coming off Basin Mountain as well as climbers from the adjacent bouldering areas, clearly demonstrating the shared use and love of this important road. While Valley Outdoor volunteers worked on the mudhole, USFS staff worked on raking out and placing new signage on the user created bypass around the previously impassable mudhole thus reducing further resource damage. This type of project clearly exemplifies the goal and mission of Valley Outdoors, bringing together all users to work cooperatively on all trails for all recreation while protecting our resources.

OUTSTANDING work by all the volunteers and staff of Valley Outdoors. A heartfelt thank you to all!

PS. While traveling on our roads and trails please be gentle as they dry out from our winter storms. Do not create bypasses around obstacles as it only creates more work for volunteers who already have their hands full with existing damage. TreadLightly-

Thank you!

A special thank you to our partner, The Inyo National Forest.
